Exhibition Opens February 2 in the Casa de la Cultura, Heredia

Costa Rica's first art exhibition devoted to male & female nudes in painting & sculpture moves to Heredia for the month of February 2008.

Consisting of original works by almost thirty local & international artists, this exhibition was launched in our own gallery in April 2007, and is touring the country to promote national appreciation of the nude in fine art.

Costa Rica has a substantial body of public art.  However, there has been widespread reluctance within the country to accept nudity in art.

In January 2007, our Artistic Director, Francisco Castro Lostalo, set out to change that.  Speaking to the artistic community, government representatives and the media, he challenged the establishment and the public to reconsider their views.

"Throughout time," Francisco said, "the subject of the nude in art has unleashed great arguments between cultures and religions. However, resistance was overcome by many artists such as Michelangelo, Da Vinci, Bernini, Rodin  Rembrandt, and many more, even by the Catholic Church itself from 1508 to 1512, when the Sistine Chapel was painted.  But it would appear that in Costa Rica we do not have the maturity to appreciate the beauty of a male or female torso without finding it vulgar.  As a result I am forming a group of artists to begin building in our people an awareness of the value and beauty of this art form.

The exhibition was widely covered and well received.  Its tour in other provinces began at the Colegio Universitario de Puntarenas (CUP) in September-October 2007, and continues in February 2008 at the Casa de la Cultura, in Heredia.
